Project Outline
As part of the National Railway Museum’s preparations for its 50th anniversary and the wider Railway 200 celebrations, the museum required assessment and repair of the Turntable Roads (inspection pit roads) surrounding the turntable in the Great Hall.
These historic rail assets are a central feature of the museum and required specialist consideration to ensure they could be safely repaired and brought back into use, while maintaining ongoing public access and operational safety within a live museum environment.
Mercury3 Consult was appointed to provide independent technical advisory support, helping ensure the works were planned and delivered in line with appropriate railway engineering standards and asset management best practice.

Our Service
Mercury3 Consult provided technical advisory support across the planning, procurement, and delivery phases of the project.
Our role included:
- Advising on the application of relevant railway engineering standards for heritage rail infrastructure.
- Supporting the museum’s procurement process to engage a suitably qualified and experienced contractor.
- Providing technical oversight to ensure works were delivered safely and appropriately.
- Supporting the correct application of asset management principles for long-term stewardship of the museum’s rail assets.
Overall coordination was led by Mercury3 Consult, supported by specialist engineers covering track (P‑Way) and civil engineering disciplines.
A key challenge was supporting the museum in procuring the right contractor for a complex and sensitive environment. This was achieved through robust preparation, clear identification of applicable standards, and close collaboration with the museum team throughout the process.
