Rail Innovation in Action: Achieving a Key Milestone in Traffic Management Deployment

Our Principal Consultant, Simon Smith, has successfully helped deliver a significant milestone in the Luminate Traffic Management deployment project.

The project aims to expand Traffic Management coverage across the Anglia, Western, and Wales routes to enhance train service management and improve performance.

🎯 Before deployment, the existing signalling systems and Scalable workstations required updates. This involved temporarily disabling the systems to carry out data changes, rebooting, and restoring workstation control —all of which had to be completed overnight to minimise disruption.

Adding to the complexity, this work needed careful coordination to avoid impacting other simultaneous engineering projects.

🤝 As Project Manager, Simon Smith oversaw the deployment and ensured technical and operational readiness. His responsibilities included access planning deconfliction, stakeholder management, requirements, and training.

The milestone was achieved through close collaboration with the system provider Resonate, the Network Rail planning team, Train Operating Companies, and the Operations Team at Upminster Signalling Centre in Essex. Together, the team identified an appropriate access window and addressed all technical concerns to ensure safety and operational satisfaction.
