Celebrating 200 Years of Train Travel in 2025

Did you know that on 27 September 1825, the world’s first passenger train, hauled by George Stephenson’s Locomotion No.1, carried more than 400 people along the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR)? 🚂

This historic journey attracted crowds of up to 40,000 people and marked the beginning of modern passenger rail travel.

What Is Railway 200?

Railway 200 is a year-long programme, launched in January 2025, to commemorate two centuries of railway history. The programme features a diverse range of activities and events, highlighting the railway’s rich past, its essential role today, and its significance in building a sustainable future.

The Stockton & Darlington Railway (S&DR), which opened on 27th of September 1825, and was the first passenger railway to use steam trains to transport passengers – connecting places, people, communities and ideas, and ultimately transforming the world.

A key focus of Railway 200 is inspiring future generations. The initiative encourages young people from all backgrounds to explore careers in rail while also attracting volunteers to support heritage railways. To tell the story of Railway 200, four main themes will be explored:

S&DR200: A Festival of Celebration

As part of Railway 200, Darlington, Durham, and Stockton-on-Tees councils, along with the Tees Valley Combined Authority, have partnered with local, national, and international organizations to present S&DR200—a nine-month festival featuring projects of global significance throughout the bicentenary year. Many of our team have decades of experience within the industry, with a number having close links to The Stockton & Darlington Railway. We very much look forward to Railway 200, and what this once-in-a-generation celebration will bring.

Two weeks ago, Mercury3 Consultant Norman Hugill CIRO had the privilege of attending a special event at Darlington Station, where London North Eastern Railway (LNER) unveiled a commemorative livery on one of its Azuma trains 🚆

This striking design celebrates the 200th anniversary, and the livery, aptly named ‘Darlington’, honours the town’s world-changing contribution to the railway and features notable events and landmarks from its history.

As a trustee of the Friends of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, Norman represented the organisation at the event, which also featured performances by the Voices of Darlington Choir and Durham singer-songwriter Sam Slatcher.
